Bob Richmond has worked extensively across the disciplines of arts and making, and was tutored from a young age by influential teacher Harry Thubron.
After some ground-breaking initial periods of working in the studios of Ron Arad and Danny Lane in the early 90s, Bob studied furniture making at The London College of Furniture, under the tutelage of Robert Thornhill, and went on to create extensive work for numerous clients, linking functionality with sculptural form.
As project leader at The Motor House, he has created and led many workshops and projects with University of Hertfordshire, Teesside University, and the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam.
He completed a Masters degree at Teesside University, under the tutelage of Michael Hall.
In 2018, along with the historian Pat Whaley, Bob helped save the historic buildings of Red Barns in Redcar, designed by Philip Webb, and with the support of Barker Langham and Purcell architects.
He has collaborated extensively with the Gertude Bell archive at Newcastle University, and helped with the making of Letters from Baghdad, the 2016 documentary about the life and work of Gertrude Bell, directed by Zeva Oelbaum and Sabine Krayenbühl.
In 2021 Bob started working alongside Richard Wentworth, and the two became close collaborators, creating talks and presentations, exhibitions, and working to catalogue Wentworth’s extensive collection.
Currently he is working in collaboration with William Morris Gallery on a forthcoming exhibition at the WMG in Walthamstow, opening in October 2025, and has been leading the organisation for events around the 2026 centenary year for Gertrude Bell.
Further current projects include working with the Camden Psychotherapy Unit to support them in their fundraising and with innovative making projects linking donors with artists, and in working with graduates from Northumbria University and other leading design courses across the country, to support new ways of collaborative working.
Further upcoming projects and partnerships are with York St John University, University of Vermont, and the Bard Graduate Center, New York.
